The full meaning of FESTAC is  Festival of African Culture.

Brief History of FESTAC

FESTAC is an acronym for the Second World African Festival of Art and Culture which was held in the year 1977. FESTAC was the biggest Black African festival that was held around that time. It was bigger than the festival that was previously held in Dakar, Senegal.

The festival at the time showcased African Culture, Art, Music, and More. Different African Countries Performed at that event. Different Musical art was performed at that event which includes, including Stevie Wonder from the United States, Bembeya Jazz National from Guinea, Mighty Sparrow from Grenada, Gilberto Gil from Brazil, and Miriam Makebe from South Africa, and many more.

During this period a housing estate was built known as FESTAC Village. The long-time benefit of building the estate was to reduce the housing pressure in Lagos State at that time. Rehearsals and interaction by participants were done at the Estate.

The Event was a huge success and the host country Nigeria were entrusted with all the artifact that was used that day. Some of the monuments of that festival are preserved in the museum at the Center for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC).
