The National Examination Council (NECO) is an examination body in Nigeria that is responsible for conducting SSCE and issuing SSCE certificates in Nigeria. They are several functions of NECO which we will be discussing in this article.
The National Examination Council was established in 1992 by the former head of state General Ibrahim Babangida during his administration as the Head of State of Nigeria.

Conduct Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE)
One of the functions of NECO is to conduct the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for both Internal and External. And also issue out certificate.
Internal Examinations are meant for students who are in their final year in the Senior Secondary School and External examinations are meant for candidates who are not in Secondary School.
NECO SSCE Internal Exam is usually conducted after WASSCE Exams that’s from July to July and NECO SSCE External Exams are conducted from November to December.

Conduct Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)
Another functions of NECO is to conduct the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). BECE is taken by students in their final year of Junior Secondary School in Nigeria.
NECO conducts BECE in all the Unity Colleges and also some private Junior Secondary Schools in Nigeria. You have to write that exam or WAEC BECE before you will be promoted to Senior Secondary School.

Conduct National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE)
Another functions of NECO is to conduct a common entrance examination for prospective students who want to gain admission into any Unity Colleges in Nigeria.
Unity colleges are Secondary Schools that are owned and managed by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
